The 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is one of the most celebrated American performance cars ever built. At its heart is the legendary, hand-built 7.0-liter LS7 V8 producing an astonishing 505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, launching the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. When introduced, the Z06 carried a base price of $65,800, making it the most powerful, most capable, and surprisingly the lightest Corvette in the lineup.
What makes the LS7 truly special isn't just its displacement—it's the engineering. Featuring lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, a forged steel crankshaft, CNC-ported cylinder heads, and an 11.0:1 compression ratio, the engine willingly revs to 7,000 rpm while delivering a broad, flat torque curve with over 400 lb-ft available from approximately 2,400 to 6,400 rpm. The result is an engine that combines immense low-end torque with the willingness to rev like a much smaller powerplant.
To harness that performance, Chevrolet strengthened virtually every major drivetrain component. The Z06 received a heavy-duty Tremec six-speed manual transmission, reinforced rear differential, upgraded clutch, larger brakes, wider wheels and tires, and dedicated coolers for the engine oil, transmission, differential, and power steering. A dry-sump lubrication system ensures consistent oil pressure even during sustained high-g cornering, making the LS7 equally at home on the racetrack or the open road.
Weight reduction was another engineering priority. The Z06 rides on an aluminum hydroformed chassis that is approximately one-third lighter than the standard Corvette's steel frame while maintaining exceptional rigidity. A fixed magnesium roof structure, magnesium engine cradle, carbon-fiber front fenders, and carbon-fiber floor panels all contribute to a remarkably low curb weight of just 3,147 pounds—roughly 140 pounds lighter than the standard C6 Corvette. The result is an incredibly balanced sports car with razor-sharp handling, phenomenal braking, and world-class performance.
Today, the C6 Z06 has become one of the most sought-after modern Corvettes thanks to its naturally aspirated LS7 engine, lightweight construction, and pure analog driving experience. It represents one of the last truly raw, driver-focused American performance cars and continues to earn recognition as one of the greatest performance bargains ever produced.
